Sodium Hydroxide or Lye Sodium Hydroxide or lye is an essential ingredient in the soap making process. When sodium hydroxide is mixed with a liquid, a lye solution is created. This solution, when mixed with fats and oils, will cause a chemical reaction called saponification. All of our cold press, hot process, old fashion shave soap and whipped soaps are made using Lye.
Cold Process Soap Making
Cold Process soap making is done by mixing fixed oils with Sodium Hydroxide or Lye. By Mixing these together it causes a chemical process called saponification, where the composition of the oils change with the help of the lye to create a bar of soap. One of the main benefits of cold press soap making is having complete control over ingredients.
While making cold press soap, patience is a virtue as this process has a 4-6 week curing time. The end result is a beautiful handmade soap.
Hot Process Soap Making
Hot Process (HP) is another method of making soap completely from scratch. It differs from the more popular and common Cold Process (CP) method in that heat is applied to complete the saponification process before the soap goes into the mold. The result is a great bar of soap, similar to what you get with the CP method, with one HUGE BENEFIT; the soap is ready to use immediately (although it’s a good idea to allow a few weeks for the soap to firm up).
